Who We Are
The Union enrolls students from six continents who have come to learn with each other and from each other as a truly Catholic Church. Some are encountering theological study for the first time, while others are refreshing themselves after years in ministry.
Classes at the Union are diverse, comprised of priesthood candidates, lay, religious, and sabbatical students. The age range is from recent college graduates to retirees. While priesthood candidates and some lay students study full-time, many lay students study part-time juggling the demands of work and family. Some part-time students already work in ministry in paid or volunteer positions. Other students work in a wide variety of fields including government, business, technology, and social service. Some plan to become full-time ecclesial ministers while others seek to grow spiritually and deepen their knowledge of the Catholic faith. Sabbatical students bring a lifetime of experience in ministry, often in third-world countries, that enriches class discussion for all.
Over 1700 graduates of the Union are working in a wide variety of ministries and serve throughout the United States and the world. Graduates serve as parish priests, directors of religious education, teachers, campus ministers, missionaries, spiritual directors, and youth ministers. Others work at local or national social service or social justice organizations and some pursue doctoral studies.
Washington Theological Union is proud of these remarkable men and women of faith and integrity, committed ministers for the church who are serving in the widest imaginable offices and capacities.
