Washington DC – Washington Theological Union announced Dr. Doris Donnelly will give the keynote address at Washington Theological Union’s Graduation Ceremony. Fr. John Burkhard stated, “I am very happy Dr. Donnelly has accepted our invitation to speak at Washington Theological Union’s graduation. Our school is blessed to have such a renowned academic offer her insight to our students and faculty during our graduation ceremony.”
Dr. Doris Donnelly is currently Professor of Theology and Director of the International Cardinal Suenens Center at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Donnelly received her B.A. from Manhattanville College (1961), M.A. in theology from the University of Southern California (1967), and Ph.D. in theology from Claremont College (1971). She has been a past president of the North American Academy of Liturgy and of Pax Christi/USA. She was director of Fordham University’s graduate program in spirituality (1972-1977) and has taught at Princeton Theological Seminary, St. John’s University (NY) and St. Mary’s College (IN). She has been a member of the John Carroll University faculty in religious studies since 1988.
She is a current member of the Editorial Board for the liturgical periodical “Assembly,” a contributing editor for the Jesuit magazine “America,” a frequent consultor for several Catholic health care systems and has been a keynote speaker at numerous Catholic and ecumenical conferences. Dr. Donnelly is the author of eight books and over 60 articles with particular emphasis on ecclesiology, liturgy, reconciliation and forgiveness.
She is also distinguished by her service as Director of John Carroll’s Cardinal Suenens Center of Theology and Life. The Center is well-known internationally for its endeavors to study the achievements and heritage of Vatican Council II; to be attentive especially to the reception of the as yet unachieved goals of the Council, and, through symposia, publications and funded scholarly research, to increase understanding and pursuit of those goals; to further the ecumenical advances of the Council through respectful dialogue; to bridge conversation between church leadership and the theological community; and to intersect the pastoral goals of Vatican Council II with those of the culture in response to the Church’s call for "the evangelization of the culture." Every other year, the Center selects a recipient for its Living Water Award. Past honorees: 1996--Mother Teresa and Cardinal Joseph Bernardin; 1998--Cardinal Godfried Danneels; 2000--Cardinal Franz Koenig; 2002--Cardinal Roberto Tucci, S.J.; 2004--Helen Prejean, C.S.J.
